The Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Cap Metro) Board of Directors in Austin, Texas, has named Randy Clarke as the agency's next president and CEO.

The regularly scheduled January board meeting is set for Jan. 29, and board members plan to vote on approval of a contract with Clarke following his negotiations with executive search firm Krauthamer & Associates.

Clarke has served as the vice president of operations and member services at the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) since April 2016.

The board’s criteria for a candidate for this role included: an ability to develop Cap Metro’s long-term strategic vision; engage the community at all levels; and forge partnerships in areas such as new and existing infrastructure, development, land use and public policy.

Another priority of the board’s was finding a candidate with the ability to secure new funding sources for the agency.

Before Clarke’s time at APTA, he spent seven years in various roles with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), including serving as deputy chief operating officer and assistant general manager of engineering, maintenance and preparedness, and senior director of security.

Cap Metro said it carried out a rigorous search process to ensure the agency found the best possible leader. Krauthamer & Associates assisted Cap Metro with its search for a new leader beginning in late July, when Linda Watson announced her retirement after more than seven years in the position.

The transit agency gathered public feedback at multiple board meetings about the search since July, the company said.

Cap Metro said the Central Texas community had the opportunity to hear from the company’s final four candidates at a public meeting on Jan. 8 and to provide further feedback on the candidates via email and social media throughout the past week.
