The California Transportation Commission announced March 24 that millions of dollars in state funds will be directed to local San Diego governments to restore transportation infrastructure.

The funds are part of the agency’s $1.1 billion investment in infrastructure across the state, which is funded by the congressional Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and a 2017 state senate bill designated as the “Road Repair and Accountability Act,” according to a local news report

The San Diego Association of Governments will receive the majority of the funds, around $37.3 million, for the fifth phase of the region’s Rail Improvement Program to stabilize Del Mar Bluffs from erosion.

Following a collapse in 2021, the bluffs have been a priority of infrastructure improvements in North County for many years. Additional problems along the cliffs have hampered transportation throughout the corridor, which is home to the Amtrak Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo rail lines, the report said.

“California and our federal partners are taking action now to create a safer, more resilient, and more equitable transportation future for all Californians,” Caltrans Director Tony Tavares said in a release. “These visionary infrastructure investments are giving Caltrans the tools it needs to rebuild California.”
