Pittsburgh Regional Transit has announced that work inside the Mt. Lebanon light-rail tunnel will resume next week.

The $5.1 million project to modernize the emergency ventilation system aims to reduce both moisture inside the tunnel and noise from the fans, a release said. Contractors will begin replacing conduit on the inbound side of the tunnel on March 6 from 8 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.

From 8 p.m. until the end of service each weekday, Red Line riders traveling both inbound and outbound will board light rail vehicles on the outbound platforms of Mt. Lebanon Station and Dormont Junction. When the contractors are not working, the inbound platform will be available.

The new fans will be installed by contractors this fall, with the entire project expected to be completed by early next year. Any construction activities that will have an impact on residents, businesses, or riders will be announced ahead of time.

In January 2022, PRT began work inside the tunnel, which connects Mt. Lebanon and Dormont. The project has been delayed for several months due to supply chain issues and the discovery of corroded metal conduit inside the tunnel. Before work could resume, the conduit had to be replaced, a release said.

Additional information about the project is available here.
