Metra crews on April 21 will begin work on a major rehabilitation project at the Rock Island Line's 103rd Street/Washington Heights Station. The station will remain open for passenger service throughout the project, but the depot building will be inaccessible to commuters while construction is underway.

The depot building, which was built in 1910, will be completely renovated as part of the project. The lobby will be expanded and the entire interior will be rehabilitated. The building’s exterior will be repainted, and new soffit and fascia along the roof line will be installed. Inside and outside the depot, new LED lighting will also be installed.

With the installation of a new stamped patio area around the depot, as well as other improvements to pathways between the depot, the boarding platforms, and the parking area, the project will also address ADA accessibility issues, Metra said.

The project is part of Metra’s 2023 station beautification program and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2023. Metra’s beautification program is an annual effort across the system, focused on repairs such as painting, gutter replacement, and concrete patching that, if not addressed, can lead to facility deterioration.

The program also aims to complete more extensive station improvements, such as the 103rd Street/Washington Heights project.
