AREMA Railway Roadbed & Ballast Symposium Wraps Up Today

KANSAS CITY, Mo.– After nearly two days of presentations on various aspects of roadbed and ballast maintenance, the program concluded this afternoon.
The participants and presenters at the symposium represented a wide swath of engineers that perform research on ballast and sub-grade projects that will stabilize ballast and roadbed for excellent train support, as well as a longer-life and more trouble-free ongoing maintenance. There were representatives from Class I railroad research departments, consulting firms, the academic engineering community (which includes engineering professors and graduate students) along with independent consultants.
If you’re an AREMA member, and ballast/roadbed is part of your job responsibility, you’ll want to access the proceedings of the entire seminar. One of today’s presenters was HNTB, represented by Philippe Santos, P.E. and Mike Yates, P.E., who discussed the benefits of ground-penetrating radar and how they used it for projects on the Hartford Line (CT Rail), South Coast Rail, and MBTA’s Mattapan Line.
