Metrolinx Guideway Construction Progresses on Hazel McCallion Line

Timelapse video and design renderings offer a glimpse of elevated section of the route.

The Hazel McCallion Line will provide significant infrastructure and transit enhancements to Hurontario Street, with plans to add a new elevated guideway that will span above Highway 403.

It is a separate elevated stretch of the light rail line that branches out from the mainline tracks over Highway 403 to the west, towards Mississauga City Center, and rejoins the main tracks south of the highway, a release said. 

It is being constructed for the light rail transit project to serve as a stop for other transit systems and routes in Peel, including as MiWay buses and GO Transit.

The guideway is supported by 16 piers and six support structures, many of which are nearing completion. Together with the deck work, the precast girder installation has begun, according to Metrolinx.

Timelapse cameras were installed nearby at the beginning of elevated guideway construction to track development visually.

The timelapse video (available to view here) shows the installation of piers, followed by the girders that form the foundations of the guideway deck.

The advantages of elevated guideway infrastructure include providing a dedicated channel for light rail transit, supporting high-order transit with minimal impact on local traffic, and being a visually pleasing piece of urban infrastructure, Metrolinx said. 

Mobilinx, the Hazel McCallion Line’s builder, supplied Metrolinx with renderings of what the future LRT will look like once completed, presenting a conceptual “look and feel” of the elevated guideway.
