A safety plan has been proposed for the HART (Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation) Honolulu Rail System, whose first segment is expected to open in July.

KHON Channel 2 on March 27 reported that the Department of Transportation Services for the city and county of Honolulu has submitted the plan to the Honolulu City Council. It includes a “three-level security system” in which station operators will be positioned at each station, train operators will be on every other train, and Honolulu police will respond “as needed,” according to the Nexstar Media Group affiliate. Also patrolling select stations, trains and parking facilities will be customer safety officers. The plan also provides potential rail service hours. On weekdays, trains would run every 10 minutes from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on weekends and holidays, they would run from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The next step, KHON Channel 2 reported, is for the City Council Transportation Committee to hold a plan hearing, which is set for April 4.

The Honolulu Rail System’s first segment from east Kapolei to Aloha Stadium—including nine stations and 10 miles of guideway—is complete, according to HART. Trial running of trains, stations and communication systems “continues to make positive progress,” and upon completion, the segment will be transferred to the Department of Transportation Services for service launch. The second segment’s 5.2 miles of guideway construction and trackwork is complete, and work continues on its four stations. On the third segment, utilities relocation work is under way along Dillingham Boulevard and through the downtown area.
