The existing Hudson River tunnels are more than 100 years old and require service outages every weekend to perform routine maintenance.

The Gateway Project is getting financial attention from the federal government.

President Joe Biden has included $100 million for the $12.3 billion Hudson Tunnel Project. It marks the first time the project has received money earmarked by the federal government. Also included in the budget is $400 million for the $6.9 billion Second Avenue Subway extension in New York City.

Geotechnical investigation work on the Gateway Project was completed earlier this year. The work is required to enter the engineering phase of the $5.6 billion Federal Transit Administration Capital Investment Grant, which would help fund the Hudson Tunnel Project.

“Finishing geotechnical investigations to reduce risk and provide certainty on where and how to dig the first rail tunnel underneath the Hudson River in a century is a major accomplishment,” the Gateway Development Commission said in a joint statement.
